Farmhouse Foyers: Getting Inspired

Mornin' y'all!

Here's my tip of the day...

Don't get so involved laughing your butt off
with your children at something on You Tube
that they totally miss the bus!

LOL!

THAT was our morning.

But, I can hear us sometime in the future laughing over it...

"Remember when we were watching that ram
butt that guy on You Tube and we forgot to watch for the bus?"

Ian summed it up best, "It was totally worth it, Mom."

LOL!

Yes, yes it was.

Laughter is the BEST way to start the morning!

Anyhoo...

Time to announce my project for the month.

I admit, I've been busy/lazy the last couple of weeks and
haven't had the time or the energy
to even tackle the smallest craft.

The mantle is still looking lucky and Easter
will be upon us before I know it.

*Sigh*

I know if I want to motivate myself,
I need to throw something up here,
so y'all hold me accountable to "Git 'er done".

My next project...

Our ridiculously tiny, horribly narrow,
bad-basement-steps-placement west entry.

I hate this space!

From the tacky wall paper to how tiny it is...

Ugh.

You literally walk in the door and have to shut it behind you
to be able to go into the dining room.

Ain't no fixin' that!

{Load Bearing Walls}

I get why it is the way it is.

I'm sure in the time when people up put up food stores for the winter,
it made sense to come strait in the west door to
head right down to the basement.

The conundrum for a present day family is that since this is
pretty much what we use for our main entrance,
it is blah and unwelcoming.

And because the space is so tiny,
it's hard to decide what to do with it.

And how do I decorate it when we may need to
get down to the basement during a tornado warning?

Plus, it is also a crap catcher.

The kids walk in the door and dump their book bags,
coats, gloves, mittens, and shoes on the floor...

And then the older ones come home later, open the door, and
kick the younger three's stuff out of the way,
dump their stuff on top, and then raid the fridge.

{That'd be keeping it really real.}

The lockers on the back porch are supposed to be for that.

Do they use them?

Nooooooooooo.

However,  I've noticed with each room I makeover,
they respect my hard work and do their best
to pick up after themselves.

I'm hoping they'll do the same with this space.

So, what to do with a teeny-tiny little area that has to have
quickly moveable decor, in case of a tornado
but still needs to be organized?

Here's a few entry ways that are inspiring me...

Love this little foyer table!

(Plus, I just happen to have one like it. BONUS!)

Entry Table from Etsy
Old Windows +Ironstone pitchers ?

Yes, please!

The Farmhouse Porch
I just happen to have some antique watering cans in the shop.

And you know I'm all about using what you've got!

What I'd really like to have is a church pew.

Like this:

Or this:

My Old Country House
Alas, the west entry is too small.

:(

BUT...

The parlor turned dining room
turned back to parlor would have the PERFECT spot.

I know...

One thing at a time, Laura.

Focus.

First...

I'm going to tackle that ugly entry west entry way!

Until next time...

  1. Good luck, Laura - I know whatever you do will be brilliant. Plus, if it was all perfect and done, where would be the fun in that, right? Keep dreaming big, yes?

As for your YouTube/ laughter causing bus miss?
THAT is what you will remember, not missing the bus. Love it, long as it doesn't happen too often, right? I think laughing - enjoying- your children is the best thing. So many people's mornings start angry and harried and horrible.

Good for you and the memory you made.

  4. Yeah what Bronwyn said!!! So you are giving yourself a month to tackle this? Who wants to bet with me..... my money is on done in two weeks TOPS! Once you are in the zone there is no stopping you. Dorothy, for ease of moving anything heavy when the tornado is at your doorstop, put it on wheels, then the kids can roll it out of the way if you are not home.

  5. Bliss is full of confidence however we have yet to,see her DINING ROOM...I'm just sayin....That is why I NEVER promise a reveal until I already finished it! LOL OF COURSE it will look great! You have a wonderful style and will come up with the PERFECT solution. The kids don't use the lockers? Imagine that! I am now using the nice, custom desk areas we built for our kids to store boxes of fabric and crafting supplies......they NEVER used them for homework, or creating cute art, or studying ( NO one studies MOM...gosh), or journaling deep and mysterious thoughts......sigh Oh well....I needed the storage space....
Can't wait to see what you do.....are you promising a reveal?

  6. Oh I am LOVING your inspiration pictures!! So I am sure it is going to be GOOD! Can you believe I passed up a Church Pew a few years back. Not having space for it was the reason, but come on how often is it that you see one of those things. I guess I could of put it on the roof or something because NOW...We have space for it! YEESH!! Can't wait to see what you do :)
Laughter is certainly a good way to start the morning, even if that means missing the bus ;)

  7. We are almost done with our mudroom/entry. The mess was just too much to stand it any longer. I've been searching for a pew for years but to no luck. So I went ahead with plan B. Can't wait to see what you do with that space!

  8. Ok, I'm having a hard time understanding this little space... you say it is how you get to the basement?? HOW?? Does the floor open up? If that's the case then no wonder I don't get it, we don't have stuff like that where I live! Anyway, however it works I'm excited to see what you decide to do with it! I'm sure that removing that hideous wallpaper will make a world of difference on its own! How about a nice quote on the end wall or an interesting stencil/paint technique? That would really dress it up without having more stuff to move if you need to use it.

    1. Tania - I am so glad you put this because I don't get the space either but thought I was just being stupid. It looks like a little closet to me - ????

Anyway, I agree with everyone else that no matter what you do to it, it will be beautiful and I can't wait to see it!! Vicki

  9. What about a fold up bench ala ikea wall desk? You could hang a pretty curtain in front of the space? You could even hang picture(s) from the curtain rod. Coat rack?
