Living in a 1905 Victorian is not without it's share of headaches.
What you think will be a small project, turns into a big one
Or
You start a project, only to stop because
We didn't actively start really working on the interior
of our house until 18 months ago.
The exterior...
Eh.
It's on The List.
I'm thankful to own a rare picture of what our house
looked like after it was built, thanks to the previous owner.
The picture above is how our house looked in the early 1900s.
And when we moved in...
Some earlier owner tore off the porch,
took the railings off from around the center dormer,
and covered up the third story windows.
Plus, they painted it a lovely shade of Carolina Blue.
While I was a Tarheel fan when I lived in the south,
that color on a house doesn't do anything for me.
Believe me, there are times I look at it and think, "Dear God, why????"
LOL!!!
(I have to laugh or I would probably cry.)
(I have to laugh or I would probably cry.)
When we bought this place, we rolled up our sleeves
and had to do the boring, expensive stuff first.
Like new windows.
33 to be exact.
24 existing and 8 new construction....
Replacing the ones that had been covered in the dormer and the cupola.
We installed a $14,000 boiler system to heat our house,
because $500 a month in propane was killing us
during the winter months.
Urethane insulation was applied to seal the basement
and
hide all those ugly cracks.
New hot water heater.
New Water Softener.
And finally, two years ago we installed central air.
We do nothing on credit, only what we can afford
when we can afford it.
It's a looooooong process.
Thank the good Lord that new siding is slated for early fall.
It's been a long time coming!!!
I don't suppose any of you want to chime in as to what colors????
This has been an ongoing discussion for years now.
And we're still no closer to knowing what we want to do.
Ugh.
Anyhoo...
The Interior.
The Interior.
Today I thought I'd share with you some of the progress,
as well as the rooms that have had NO progress.
as well as the rooms that have had NO progress.
(And maybe to make myself feel better about
what we've accomplished in the mere 18 months,
since we started on the interior - or to just make me
more depressed at what we have left to do. LOL!)
since we started on the interior - or to just make me
more depressed at what we have left to do. LOL!)
Today, I'll show you the downstairs.
Tomorrow, the upstairs.
:)
When you come in the side door, this is what you see...
This is my next project.
Entrance:
Hating this area does not even come close to how I feel about it.
There's a very tiny entrance way, only big enough for one person.
Literally, if the exterior door is open, you cannot get into the office.
(Which is why the picture is so bad.)
To your left is a doorway to the office
and to your right is a doorway to the kitchen.
And to top it off, the floor opens up to the stairway for our basement.
I have no clue what to do with it.
HELP?????
KITCHEN:
The kitchen is the bane of my existence.
I was an idiot and removed the upper part of the built in hutch.
Don't shoot me.
LOL!
And I removed the wainscoting.
Put the gun down!
HA HA HA!
In my defense, that was well before I realized the beauty of old.
I'm now begging Scott to rebuild it,
since I kept all the doors and hardware.
At least I wasn't stupid enough to get rid of it all!
The kitchen is currently an "In Progress" project.
It has been dry walled and painted.
The cabinets have all been replaced.
I need new counter tops and floors.
And no, there are no after pictures because
I wouldn't want to horrify you.
Although here are some of the demo...
(Savanna took two of these and she did so in B&W.)
I don't know what I was thinking to rip out some of the stuff that I did!
Makes me want to smack myself, now.
ARGH!
Next Up...
BACK PORCH
Okay... FYI... That is not my crap.
LOL!
I took these pictures when we looked at the house, before we bought it.
The back porch would be another one of those "In Progress" projects.
I've ripped out that hideous wood paneling
and pulled up the nasty carpet,
so you can see the great wood siding and porch floor beneath...
But that's as far as I've gotten.
It's THE project as soon as it gets warm.
No insulation makes it tough to do anything in the winter -
and it's ungodly hot in the summer.
The time to do it is in the Spring or the fall,
and it always passes me by.
I'm seeing white walls and Gray painted floors.
A chandy.
And turning it into a Mud/Laundry Room.
Right now, I have a row of lockers for the kids,
that we scored after they consolidated a local school district
and closed down a school.
And I admit, the porch has become
the "Crap Catcher" for now.
the "Crap Catcher" for now.
But, it'll be a great space once I get it done.
LIVING ROOM
This is how our living room looked shortly after we moved in:
Here is what it looks like today:
I have so many plans for this room...
Painting the floors.
Painting the walls.
Painting the trim.
*sigh*
It's on "The List".
For now, I'm somewhat satisfied.
This room was originally the dining room,
but it's the only room in the house big enough
for a couch and TV.
The layout drives me nuts
and I'm always eyeballing how I can change the furniture placement
to make better use of the space.
I've yet to hit on anything that I feel is right.
Any suggestions????
THE OFFICE:
The "Office" started out as the dining room.
I'm not quite certain the purpose of it before.
A sitting room???
I'm not quite certain the purpose of it before.
A sitting room???
The floors were painted when we moved in...
WITH WALL PAINT!
Who does that????
So, every time we pushed our chairs back from the table,
it took a layer of paint with it.
it took a layer of paint with it.
The floors have since been sanded and stained,
however they're pine and have not held up very well.
That, and the contractors were incompetent.
They will be repainted...
With FLOOR paint.
Today, this room is our "Office",
which is pretty much just a fancy term
for where our computer is.
LOL!!!
This room is also where I stash my craft stuff.
I promise you, that cupboard is not nearly that organized now.
LOL!!!
When I re-did the office last January,
this is what the mantle looked like then...
It changes constantly throughout the year.
To see it now, you can go HERE.
I'm currently hemming and hawing over the space
where the fireplace should be on the mantle.
Chalkpaint?
Hearth?
It too, is on the The List.
DINING ROOM
When we moved in, I referred to this room as the parlor.
I'm fairly certain it's what it was originally called.
My kids were perpetually confused
as to what room I was talking about
when I started calling it the dining room.
It is another room that is insanely hard to decorate
because of all the doorways, windows, and the stairs.
And it's another room that is currently "In Progress".
The china cabinet, to my everlasting regret, is sold.
However...
I have another smaller one in the shop
that is waiting on me to have the energy to tackle.
It's smaller and a better fit for the space.
I added this sideboard last summer.
The book case is one thing that I have a hard time decorating
and it's currently sitting empty.
And while Scott did take it out and fix how it was rigged
(all the shelves were different widths.)
He has yet to trim it out.
And while Scott did take it out and fix how it was rigged
(all the shelves were different widths.)
He has yet to trim it out.
I've had the trim and the wainscoting bought since last April.
The new front door has been bought for 4 years.
Those would be one of those projects that is waiting on Scott.
I've been considering posting his cell number on here
for y'all to call him, since my nagging isn't getting me very far.
LOL!!!
As soon as those are done, the floors are getting a coat of paint...
Another contractor fail on the re-doing of the hardwood floors.
One of the many reasons we try to do things ourselves.
We've been burned one too many times by shady contractors...
Windows...
Floors...
Furnace...
Air Conditioning...
Is there any contractor out there that still care
about quality of work and still has some integrity?
They're few and far between around here evidently
because we've only found one... The Plumber.
LOL!
The very last room is a small bathroom
that the previous owner had installed under the stairs.
DOWNSTAIRS BATHROOM
It was well done and I don't have a whole lot of problems with it.
Well, except for the blue sponge paint.
All it needs is a different coat of paint.
I'll get to it...
Eventually.

Sometimes I get so frustrated over lack of progress.
I want things done NOW.
Like...
Yesterday.
But, I suppose 2 partially completed rooms and
1 fully completed room isn't too bad in a year and a half.
I admit, it's overwhelming.
But, if I can just tackle one room at a time,
one day it'll all be completed and well worth it.
I hope.
Stay tuned tomorrow for the tour of the upstairs!

I can't believe all the changes and they are all for the better for sure. I just love all the built ins your home has, you have done a fantastic job and I enjoy seeing all the progress.
ReplyDeleteI am so tired...I can't believe how much you have done already...Oh I know you can only see what you have to do, but the house is so BEAUTIFUL...Its gonna be GORGEOUS when its all done...
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Its gorgeous!!!
So beautiful =)
ReplyDeleteI lived in a similiar house at one time and had such dreams ! I remember pealing the layers n layers of wallpaper off only to have plaster come off with it ..what a mess !
ReplyDeleteI cant believe someone ripped the porch off and covered the windows ! I hope you will be able to restore the porch one day . I loved sitting on the wrap around porch .
Good luck with it all and looking forward to the upstairs pics .
PS: Yes you should have been shot for the hutch n wainscotting !! UGH
DC
You have done all the HUGE things. The $$ things. Now it's just the cosmetic and fun stuff left to do. I luv it!! Such character and charm. I am a sucker for the details in an older home. They don;t make it like that anymore.
ReplyDeleteHang in there Laura. You have done a LOT!!!
Hugs, Gee
What a magnificent home you have ( I would give anything to call that home!!! )
ReplyDeleteWhat you've done is beautiful - can't wait to follow all your makeovers!!!
AND what were you thinking ripping out the top cupboards LOL - can you imagine
them with glass doors?
( sorry had to say that LOL )
XXX
I almost cried when you said you tore out that built in! What were you thinking!!!
ReplyDeleteBut I love that round table with the painted base! So pretty!
Wow, you have a lot to do. Can't believe someone took the porch off. That is crazy. You have done a great job on the rooms that are somewhat finished and I am sure it will all come together. That is great that y'all can do it without borrowing. I would have to to get it done quicker. I have no patience.
ReplyDeleteI typed out my comment and Blogger ate it. So here goes again. Love the sideboard. You have a lot of rooms to work with. So you could change them to something else if need be. Who says a dining room has to BE a dining room? Use the rooms however you need them.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I can honestly say that I've never been more inspired by before and after pics. Your work is inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteWe need to form a support group for people with more projects than sense! I chalk it up to being too optimistic. I wish we had a pantry cabinet like that! I'm glad you kept all the parts though. Maybe you can install it in another room like your "office" or den to store books & stuff. I thought it might be more functional if the construction was flipped---short doors just above the counter, with the longer doors going to the ceiling. It would look great with a little crown molding at the top. I'm sure you'll find some good ideas for the other "issues", but you can find good exterior color combos on paint websites or brochures & on websites of siding companies like Certainteed. That is all the advice I have for now, but I'll let you know if I have an ephiphany. Sometimes a solution pops into my mind days later! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI understand your pain!! We live in an old house too (1934) & although we've been here 13 years, there is still so much to do yet. It seems the list is endless. Then there's always that whole "can of worms" problem that you find with just about every.single.project in an old home. Your home is beautiful now and will be drop dead beautiful once you're finish with everything! Hang in there. What's that phrase people always try to tell me...."Rome wasn't built in a day." Yeah, that's it. lol
ReplyDeleteLaura your home is beautiful! My dream would be to live in one my nightmare would be to actually have to fix it up ourselves LOL!Ain't happening in this house.I can handle painting but my Mr. is not so handy.LOVE everything you have done so far.And you are smart not to rush.Yes it is taking a while to do it all.But look at the results it looks amazing!

Who would rip the gorgeous porch off? Insane! Hopefully you will be able to return it to it's home one day. The house is gorgeous though and it has tons of potential. After seeing what you did with your daughter's room, I have all the confidence in the world that your home is going to be beautiful when you are finished. And it's fantastic that you do all of this with the money you have on hand, that's smart. If it makes you feel better, when we moved into our old house it was 3 years before I could even decorate the way I wanted. We needed new windows, a roof, furnace, floors refinished...get the picture? We bought our furniture from an old couple who were moving to Germany and it was hideous. It takes a long time to get where you want to be, but don't lose heart. It is going to be beautiful before you know it! :)
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Just love your home and we all make decorating mistakes, you were very smart to keep the stuff your tore out, pat yourself on the back for that:) One thing is you have the ability to paint and decorate and that's one thing you can count on!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your home is beautiful. For the teeny room when you come in tje side door, how about a place to store your crafts and projects? Or an extra pantry? For the oitside of your home, it would ne so pretty a lovely shade of deep eggshell or dark cream with a beautiful red door. Or a lovely shade of sage with a black door. Whatever you choose it will be lobely no dought :) I so enjoy your blog & Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI was brought here through a linky about your daughter's bedroom. We've been adrmiring it and referring to it for a few days now; my daughter loves it and wants her room just like it! It is, indeed, gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWe, too, bought a fixer upper but haven't really gotten much fixing up done yet - just some paint and trim. I have a vision for our house of lots light and brightness but it does seem like it takes FOREVER, especially when only paying cash.
I have to tell you that at one time (before my love of all things old and used) I would have ripped out the wainscoting and built-in in your kitchen too only to regret it 10 years later when I realized the timeless beauty of such things. You're not alone! The porch and windows though? I totally don't get that. I would have never ripped them off - even before my love of all things old and used.
It is so very easy to get caught up in what's not done yet but a home isn't really about the way it looks, it's about the memories made in it - that's what your kids are going to remember. Enjoy the process, no matter how long it takes. Vicki
I have never seen a before like this, and an after so amazing!
ReplyDeleteYour "THIS OLD HOUSE" is beautiful!! You have put your heart and soul into it and it shows! Everything is coming together nicely! Those big rooms are too "over the top" and so much character!! The porch on the house was lovely....maybe a new one in the future!! Have a wonderful blessed weekend! Roxie
ReplyDeleteI love all of the changes you have already made, and cannot wait to see the progression...it makes it more fun seeing some of the befores! Wish I could pitch in and help you girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteYou don't need any advice from me on what to do, as far as I'm concerned you've got it all under control, what you've got done looks wonderful. But I'll offer up a nice stately cream color or a warm gray for the outside of the house, and please tell Scott Bliss wants the porch back on too, add that to his list.
ReplyDeleteBliss
Slow and steady, that's my motto. We have been working on our house for the past 7 years- nothing is ever simple! Have you seen the movie "The Money Pit"? That is what I refer to our house as! Love what you have done!!
ReplyDeleteOh can we move in with you :) So beautiful. I love all the work you have done. I love all your doors.

I love your tv room! I've seen pictures of it before, but this is the first time I noticed the H on the table - love it! On that weird entry could you add an old screen door to hide the closet? You could have it open in to the area as long as the hatch to the basement still had room. Or cut a door in half so that it didn't come into the entry so much? Just trying to give you ideas. I know it gets old, but you can think of it like this too...if you didn't have so much to do you would just keep redoing all your rooms over and over again to keep yourself busy. :)
ReplyDeleteI love your old house. My biggest piece of advice is to take your time. It may help to eliminate future mistakes as you now regret removing the wainscoting and the top of the built-in hutch in your rush to make a home for your family. I have remodeled 6 homes in 20 years. (husband in the military) And I have found that if I concentrate on one do-able room at a time, I am happier with the end result. For instance.... I would pick out the paint for the bathroom, scrub it top to bottom, get it painted and then do your "style" on the decore (I like your style very much!!!) In only a few days you would have one room completed. I haven't seen your upstairs yet... but if you have not made your bedroom a priority do so now... I have found if I have my bedroom completed first then I have a place to go and rest my body and nerves and I have the energy to tackle the next project. Turning a house into a home is so much fun isn't it!!
ReplyDeleteJody
Tearing the porch off the house should have been a criminal offense. What a beautiful house
ReplyDeleteI vote white on the house color. I LOVE white houses.
ReplyDeleteI stumbled here to your lovely blog from seeing your daughter's room makeover featured on Better After. I just wanted to say that you're doing a great job making your house a home. I adore your owl family pillow, it is just adorable.
